Blog | D.C. Bar Litigation Community Gen AI in eDiscovery Discussion and Social Mixer

Sandline was proud to be represented at the D.C. Bar Litigation Community GenAI in eDiscovery Discussion and Social Mixer, where our Director of Client Advisory, Dan Mastromatteo, joined fellow legal and technology leaders to explore how generative AI is reshaping discovery.

A central theme of the discussion was the distinction between traditional machine learning and GenAI, often described as an eager first year associate that can add real value but still requires thoughtful human oversight. Panelists emphasized a trust but verify mindset, underscoring the need to validate AI outputs rather than rely on them blindly. The conversation also touched on how GenAI may disrupt law firm economics, from shrinking first year associate classes to evolving billing models as manual review time decreases.

Looking ahead, panelists discussed how these shifts could reshape firm dynamics and legal workflows, potentially allowing large firms to continue scaling while giving smaller firms new opportunities to compete through efficiency and technology. Judicial guidance, possibly as soon as 2026, could further accelerate adoption, with GenAI emerging as a strong alternative to traditional machine learning, such as TAR/CAL workflows. Courts may even begin evaluating AI prompts in a manner similar to how search terms are assessed today.

Overall, the discussion reinforced that while GenAI continues to advance rapidly, its most effective use will come from pairing powerful technology with experienced legal judgment.
